The Current Trend in Office Furniture: Encouraging Collaboration in the Workplace

“One of the biggest trends in the office furniture industry today is the decline of the cubicle. The cubicle walls are coming down and their allowing employees to interact and collaborate”, according to Jenny-Lynn Georgiades, Director of Architectural and Design Support Services at Waldners Business Environments.

Since the early 80’s the size of a typical workstation has decreased 35-40%. Employees increasingly work in other places than their dedicated office or cubicle. I have read various studies which indicate that employees work in their dedicated space in a range of 38-45% of the time. Today, many companies are designing office space to incorporate more informal meeting areas and open spaces organized around teams to improve collaboration.

“They’re using the open office space that’s left over when they shrink those workstations and doing more with the in-between areas, often intermixing lounge areas where people are working with their laptops. They’re incorporating informal meeting areas at regular height or even cafe height for more of that Starbucks feel” says Georgiades.

  • I don’t actually know if the decline of cubicles are a great thing. At first, yes, interaction may take place. But, how about concentration and privacy?

    I don’t know either. In Houston I still see a lot of traditional office layouts. depends on the industry.

  • Nice to hear that the office furniture has improved! I’m so glad that this idea would help make the office look spacious and comfortable for workers. Cubicles have become very important among offices for a long time now. This idea may fit some companies. In choosing furniture and redesigning office, you have to plan it well to make it comfortable to work in.
